There are three main ways to prevent the infection from getting to the patient’s body:

1- Removing or restricting reservoirs of organisms;

  1. Disconnecting the transmission chain;
  2. Protecting the host against infection and disease.

The results of the research indicate that Iran is in a bad condition in terms of controlling nosocomial infections. Unfortunately, we do not have accurate statistics in this area, but according to international statistics, more than two million people every year suffer from nosocomial infections, however, nosocomial infections affect most of countries and not only Iran.

According to world-wide statistics, $ 17 to $ 29 billion in a year is spent on the treatment for nosocomial infections, while it can be saved with appropriate investment in controlling nosocomial infections.

According to unofficial statistics, $ 12 to 14 billion annually is spent on nosocomial infections in Iran, while there are still hospitals and medical centers in the country that disinfect their tools in old ways.

Nosocomial infections are important in terms of mortality and morbidity, longer hospitalization periods, and the imposition of care and diagnosis costs. Research results in the United States show that from every 100 hospitalized patients, five to seven people get nosocomial infection, which in some wards, such as ICU, is up to 50%; nosocomial infections also cost $ 4.5 billion a year in the United States. According to global statistics, nosocomial infections kill 19,000 people annually. Patients hospitalized in wards of infectious ICU, transplantation, burn, and surgeries are at higher risk to get nosocomial infections, so the nosocomial infection control committees focus more on these wards.

The control of nosocomial infections in Iran has not a long history.

Despite the fact that infectious disease control records have been available in Ahwaz and Shiraz universities and then several hospitals in Tehran since 1971, however, only in 1980, the issue of controlling nosocomial infections was considered, and prevention and control programs were started. There has been a little study by university centers and hospitals on the status of these infections in the country. In order to establish a national care system for nosocomial infections, the first meeting of the National Committee for the Control of Nosocomial Infections was held in 2002 at the Center for Disease Control and was followed up by the professors, experts and scholars. During the discussions of the National Committee, it was stipulated that the universal standard methodology would be the basis for the detection of nosocomial infections. This decision was taken after considering the opinions of all experts and professors of universities across the country in 2004. At present, studies of nosocomial infections in the country are reported to the Center for Disease Control, but reports do not cover all hospitals in the country. By establishing a national hospital care system in the country since 2006, it is expected that all public and private hospitals will regularly report the statistics of nosocomial infections with the same definitions and forms to the Center for Disease Control.
